The Student Government Association’s (SGA) new project of thanking the state legislature will take place on November 21. Student trustee Brendan Concannon and Bridgewater State University’s president Dr. Dana Mohler-Faria will be in charge of it.
“The project is to gather a few, heavily involved students to thank the state legislature for not raising student fees,” said Kevin Costa, treasurer of the SGA. Fifty to 100 of these heavily-involved, good-standing students will be gathered to bring about this project.
“The president and I have been talking with the council of the school to take this on,” Concannon said. “It’s really a collaborative effort.”
The project, according to Concannon, is the result of a request from the State University System. All nine state universities in Massachusetts will be participating.
The main purpose of the project is to thank the state legislature and governor for keeping fees frozen for the year, Concannon said. He added it is also meant to show gratitude for the funding of one million dollars toward internships at state schools.
“It will be a great opportunity for students to get to talk to a senator,” Concannon said. “It will also set the ground for next year.”
Concannon hopes students at Bridgewater State will continue to have no raised fees and funding for internships in the upcoming year.
While the SGA and president’s council are the organizations taking on the project, the students involved in the thanking will not strictly be limited to members of these organizations.
“We hope that some BSU democrats will be able to make it,” said Concannon. “We hope for Republicans as well, and don’t want to limit it to one group of students. We want to be as diverse as possible.”
Though there will be students from several different organizations involved in the project, Concannon states there is no specific cosponsorship.
