MEET MIDFIELDER AND CAPTAIN KATIE NASUTI

The Bridgewater State University women’s soccer team is nearing the end of a successful regular season due to their senior leadership. One of the seniors on the team has started for four straight years, and is the captain of this year’s squad.

Since arriving on campus, senior midfielder Katie Nasuti has made a name for herself out on the soccer field.

Nasuti came into Bridgewater State and found a spot in the lineup, as she started in 12 games during her freshman season.

Bridgewater State women’s soccer head coach Lou Verrochi became head coach of the Lady Bears the same year Nasuti was a freshman.

“She was by far the most talented freshman player that we had that year coming into camp,” said Verrochi.

Now in her senior season, Nasuti has emerged as one of the Lady Bear’s best players and was selected captain by the other members of the team.

“I was really excited,” said Nasuti. “I was honored to be named captain by my teammates and coach.”

Verrochi felt the decision was a good one as well.

“She’s just a very, very good leader,” said Verrochi. “I think they saw someone who definitely had excellent leadership qualities. When Katie speaks, the team listens.”

Nasuti, is in her last season in a Bears’ uniform has spent a lot of time on the field during her four years, which will make her miss the team more when she leaves.

“Just being outside and playing soccer everyday is what I’ll miss most,” said Nasuti. “It’s something that I kind of take for granted now.”

The team will miss her too when she hangs up her cleats, as she has been a reliable force in the middle of the field for the Lady Bears.

“She’s been so durable,” said Verrochi. “I don’t think she’s missed a game in four years. She’s just been an outstanding teammate. She’s been an excellent captain. She’s just an All-American type kid.”

Until she leaves, Nasuti said she is going to enjoy the last of her time here while she finishes the remainder of her final season.

Nasuti is looking to lead the team to the NCAA Division III Tournament, where they haven’t been since 2003. The Lady Bears are currently in good position, as they are in third place in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC).

What happens after Nasuti graduates is going to be an adventure for herself. Verrochi would like to see her continue in soccer.

“I hope someday she takes up coaching because I think she’d be an outstanding coach,” said Verrochi. “I think she knows the game very well. I think she reads it very well and I think she’d be an excellent coach.”

During the season so far, Nasuti has two goals with three assists for seven points.
