The Joneses (2009)

You’ve heard the phrase “Keeping up with the Joneses.” Well, what if the Joneses were actually a fake family made up of salespeople, and the entirety of their perfect, flashy lives is a lie? That is the basis for this film starring David Duchovny and Demi Moore. A great commentary on America’s obsession with material wealth. 4 out of 5.

This documentary follows the lives of two 8-year-old Thai boxers, Pet and Stam. The girls are trained in the art of Muay-Thai fighting. Watching these pint-sized fighters in pink shorts punch and kick each other is brutal, and more than a bit unsettling. What’s worse is watching them tell the cameras they do this to make money for their families. A reality check that feels like a kick in the teeth. 5 out of 5.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

The cold weather is creeping in, so bring back memories of summer with the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow. In this first installment of the POTC series, Will Turner is determined to rescue his dream girl from a crew of cursed pirates, but Captain Jack has other ideas. This Disney blockbuster is always entertaining with plenty of action.  5 out of 5.
