The Bridgewater State football team had a deflating loss at Elliot Field against Fitchburg State this past Saturday, losing to fellow MASCAC team 35-3. The Bear’s offense had trouble getting things going, gaining only a total of 273 yards between their passing and rushing game.

Sophomore quarterback Alex McLaughlin had a combined total of 146 of the team’s yards between his passing and run game.

However, Fitchburg totaled just 366 yards in total offense, but where the difference in the two offenses occurred came in the form of turnovers and 4th down attempts. With a total of three fumbles and two interceptions, and converting on zero of their six fourth down attempts.

Even with areas to improve, there were some players who shined. Leading the team on the defensive side was senior captain Nick Salois. Making four solo stops and nine assisted, the defensive workhorse totaled 14 tackles on the day.

Defensive linemen Elvis Romero and Marty Voorhis also had an impact on the game. Junior standout Elvis Romero had nine tackles, two of which were sacks for a loss. Voorhis recovered a fumble in his own right, setting the edge for the Bear’s defense.

Bouncing back from a defeat is a challenge, but senior Captain Dave Console knows that the season is not over yet. He said in an email interview that, “the coaches preach a ‘be ready’ mentality.”

Console has been a rock for the Bear’s defense in recent years, and knows the importance of each game.

After a tough loss, the Bears keep one thing in mind, as Console, their play-making safety, said it best, “I respect my teammates in and off the field…when we are on the field it’s business”.

BSU football will give it another go this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. on their home Swenson Field. Western Connecticut State University will travel to Bridgewater for the MASCAC matchup between a pair of teams that currently sit at 1-1 in the conference.
